How the estimate is built.
Four source layers produce a useful planning number. None of them can replace a current quote from a veterinarian, groomer, boarder, or insurer.
The model in one line
We begin with published national dog and cat category amounts, update each type of cost for price changes, and apply a broad state price factor to goods or services.
Insurance is the exception. It uses a national industry premium benchmark and is not state-adjusted because the public sources used here do not provide a comparable state table.
If you enter your own price, that per-pet amount replaces the modeled category before pet count is applied. The long-term scenario repeats the current annual selection for the chosen number of years and adds setup once; it is shown in flat dollars rather than presented as a lifetime forecast.
1. Care baselines
The starting point is the ASPCA’s 2021 update to its dog and cat cost table. It includes food, routine medical care, preventive medication, litter, toys, treats, licensing, grooming supplies, boarding, dental care, and one-time setup items.
These are planning baselines—not required care schedules or typical local prices. The calculator does not decide which vaccines, medications, tests, dental work, or procedures a pet needs.
Review the ASPCA source2. Inflation update
Each 2021 amount is multiplied by the mean January–June 2026 CPI divided by the mean of all 12 monthly 2021 observations. BLS series are matched to the closest cost type.
| Cost type | BLS series | 2021 mean | 2026 H1 mean | Factor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Food & treats | CUUR0000SS61031 | 156.225 | 193.556 | 1.238961 |
| Products & supplies | CUUR0000SERB01 | 204.504 | 244.512 | 1.195634 |
| Pet services | CUUR0000SS62053 | 210.525 | 279.147 | 1.325958 |
| Veterinary services | CUUR0000SS62054 | 288.769 | 410.534 | 1.421672 |
This creates an inflation-adjusted estimate. It does not claim that ASPCA or BLS published a new 2026 household budget.

Learn about the Consumer Price Index3. State price adjustment
The latest BEA release, published February 19, 2026, contains 2024 regional price parities. Goods use the state goods RPP relative to the national goods RPP of 99.567. Veterinary care and other pet services use the state “other services” RPP relative to 100.147.
An RPP of 105 means that the broad category’s price level is about 5% above the national level for that year. It is not a pet-specific survey and does not explain differences between urban and rural providers inside a state.

When selected, the calculator adds the NAPHIA 2025 State of the Industry report’s U.S. average accident-and-illness premiums for 2024: $749.29 per year for a dog and $386.47 per year for a cat.
It is not a recommendation or quote. Premiums can change with age, breed, location, deductible, reimbursement rate, annual limit, exclusions, and provider.
Review the NAPHIA report highlightsProject heuristics
These choices are useful product assumptions, not published scientific formulas:
- Small, medium, and large dog factors of 0.78, 1.00, and 1.28 apply only to food, treats, and preventive medication.
- “Occasional” professional grooming uses half the adjusted ASPCA annual amount; “regular” uses the full amount.
- The range spans 85% to 125% of predictable modeled costs. It is not a statistical confidence interval.
- Life stage is recorded as planning context but does not change the formula because the public sources used here do not support a responsible age multiplier.
- The 1–20 year total repeats the current annual scenario. It does not model inflation, changing care needs, or lifespan.
- Visitor-entered food, routine veterinary, prevention, insurance, boarding, and grooming prices take precedence over the model and are marked in the results and exported CSV.
- Emergency-fund targets are selected by the visitor. The tool does not assert one universal “right” target.
What the estimate cannot tell you
- What care a specific pet medically needs.
- Prices at a particular nearby clinic, groomer, boarder, retailer, or insurer.
- Breed-specific food, health, training, housing, or travel costs.
- How age or life stage will change future spending or how long a pet will live.
- Unpredictable illness, injury, chronic conditions, or treatment outcomes.
- Whether insurance, a wellness plan, financing, or self-funding is best for you.
If a pet may be ill or injured, contact a veterinarian. Do not use a budgeting estimate to decide whether care is needed.
